From its earliest origins, communion has had a forward-looking emphasis. It is a shared meal here, in anticipation of the Lord's return and the heavenly banquet. Communion is, in the words of the liturgy, a "token of his coming again."
Sacraments are not simply testimony, but transformation. Through participation in the sacraments, we find ourselves in the transforming presence. Since we believe communion transforms, the question each week will be what is being formed in us through one of the five images of communion: Celebration, Cost, Call, Connection, and Coming.
