The story of Moses, the ten plagues, and the exodus from Egypt is recognized each year as a reminder of God’s deliverance of Israel from the bondage of slavery. This celebration is called the Passover. While this may appear to be a Hebrew festivity, or an Old Testament story, Jesus takes the Passover seriously throughout the gospels. It is during the Passover that we find our sacrament of Communion. Understanding the Passover continues to be relevant for Christians today as the story reflects the same deliverance from bondage that we find in Jesus Christ. While each element of the Passover is significant, the four cups used throughout the meal tell us the story of Jesus in a different way. Each cup represents a promise given in Exodus 6:6-7…promises that were true to God’s people then and are still true for us today. As we discover the meaning in each cup we will also become aware of four promises God continues to fulfill in our lives today.
